She’s got to solve this—or her friends are sunk . . .

Kelly Jackson, manager of the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast, is fond of the Doblinsky brothers, Ivan and Rudy, members of the Silver Sentinels, a crew of crime-solving senior citizens in their Northern California seaside hamlet. After she discovers a jewel-encrusted dagger—with what appears to be dried blood on the blade—on their fishing boat, they share their family history with Kelly, and she learns that the knife may be part of a set from their long-ago childhood in Russia. Its sudden reappearance is eerie, but the mystery grows much more serious when a body is found on the boat. The victim was staying at Kelly’s inn, in town for a Russian Heritage Festival, and some of the organizers were clearly harboring some bitterness. But the story behind this murder seems as layered as a nesting doll—and Kelly’s feeling completely at sea.

Creating Characters
by
Janet Finsilver

In the first book of my Kelly Jackson mystery series, Murder at Redwood Cove, a manager has a fatal fall from a seaside cliff that’s deemed an accident. I needed to have a group of the man’s friends question whether or not foul play was involved. While walking one day, I found myself “interviewing” one person after another in my mind. I’d visualize them, ask them some questions, and then move on to the next one.

By the time I got back to my car, I was searching for every scrap of paper I could find to write down the people I’d “talked” to. (I now dictate notes on my phone.) One thing they all had in common was their age and their silver hair. I selected the friends I’d use in the book, and the crime-solving group of seniors, the Senior Sentinels, was born.

I began to develop their characters. The Professor, aka Herbert Winthrop retired UC Berkeley professor, brings his scholarly ways to the conversations. Gertie, Gertrude Plumber, short on size and big in attitude, taps her way into the meetings with her cane. The Russian brothers, Ivan and Rudy Dublinsky, add their voices, accents and all, to the discussions. Mary Rutledge rounds out the group in more ways than one with her plump figure and supplies the group with a wonderful array of sweets.

I quickly fell in love with this crew. They are citizens concerned for the well being of their community and take action to help whenever problems arise. Which, of course, is often in a murder mystery series. Kelly Jackson, my protagonist, takes over managing Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast.

She first becomes aware of the group when Ivan’s booming, “It was murder and you know it,” comes rolling down the hallway and into her room on the first day of her job. When she finds the source of the comment, she meets the Silver Sentinels. She becomes an honorary member, not able to be an actual member because her hair is red, not gray, and works with them to solve crimes throughout the series.

I invite you to meet the group and Kelly and follow them on their adventures in Redwood Cove, California.
