Life is a precious gift and it can change within the blink of an eye,

event her loving family, good friends, and many dreams and aspirations
were all gone. An unwanted child was sent to what was supposed to be a
place of lovingness and warmth. Instead, she soon discovered that those
responsible for her care added so much more pain and sadness to many
lives. What occurred within the walls of Cecilia House was one of the
most despicable and unimaginable acts to ever happen within an
organization whose duty it was to protect innocent children.

The Five Dollar Watch

During high school we had the opportunity to enter the young writers of the year competition. I could not contain my excitement about creating yet another story to add to my already large collection. I went home and made sure my dad purchased a new ribbon for the old dot matrix printer. I sat for hours trying to come up with something but I struggled even to write a single sentence.

I decided to take a break and do something else I loved, metal detecting in the backyard. I wanted to be an archaeologist and writer. With the frustration of not being able to come up with an idea for the story I became even angrier when I found nothing yet again with my treasured metal detector. I told my dad to throw it away and I also told him I was not going to enter the competition. He told me one of the worst things in life as you get older are regrets. I had to overcome the difficulties in life because they would only get worse.

A few days later I returned to the backyard with my detector and almost jumped onto the roof of the house when I heard it make such a loud noise. I dug until I found a watch and engraved on it was the year 1915. I was ecstatic to find a WW1 watch in my backyard and raced in to show my Dad who said only a few words “Would you have found that if you had given up?” That night I began to write my story and I was a finalist that year and attended a very special event hosted by the state library.

Many years later I found out that the watch was a reproduction and worth around five dollars but with each book that I have written I keep it close to me. That watch is the best cure for me for writers block. It is a reminder about what you can achieve with self-belief and never giving up on chasing your dreams.  Sometimes complicated things only require simple fixes, those who experience writers block need not too far away to find the cure.
