Lizzy Bennet loves life as a lawyer in the city. And not just because of the miles it puts between her and her ex. However, when she’s attacked on the street just hours after learning her identity was stolen, she tries to call home for help and ends up with the last person she expects: the very same high school boyfriend who broke her heart. He says he’s there to help, but she’s not so sure, and now, all the endless questions and regrets are clouding her judgment and preventing her from seeing the dangerous saboteur closing in.
Small-town auto mechanic, Koby Knightly, is looking forward to seeing a car show in the city. But when an unexpected call from his old girlfriend disconnects suddenly, he rushes to her aid. Throwing his plans out the window, Koby makes it his mission to protect her and discover the identity of the person trying to frame her. Will he also be able to figure out what went wrong between them back in high school or will a killer get to her first?
Maybe I’m just too old, but I feel like the golden age of action-packed romance film has passed us by. It’s been decades since a movie’s come close to a spot on this list. But I’m hopeful that 2021 will bring with it some challenges to these Top Five Romantic Suspense Movies. #SPOILERALERT
5. Conspiracy Theory
Okay, not everyone is going to like this one. I get it. But who doesn’t love paranoid cab driver, Jerry Fletcher? Is he crazy? Or is he just crazy enough to know what he’s talking about? After all, he’s “only paranoid because they want him dead.” Jerry’s hysterical and Alice is relatable and tough. Characters and a killer plot are enough to overlook a few trophy action sequences.
4. Die Hard
Look, I know what you’re going to say. Die Hard is a Romance? Seriously? Yes, it’s way more action than romance. And yes, it’s only on this list because it’s one of my all-time favorite films, but… no one can tell me they didn’t see the emotion in the eyes of our LA-Abandoned New York City Detective when he sees the love of his life in the clutches of the love-to-hate evil genius, Hans Gruber. Die Hard, I’ve said I love you a thousand times and you’ll never hear me say I’m sorry.
This movie has it all. Killer bad guy. A speeding bus. Keanu. When this one’s on cable, I’m always going to tune in so I can hear Jack say, “I have to warn you, I’ve heard relationships based on tense experiences never work.”
2. The Bodyguard
This one may lean a little more toward the romance side than action. But those edge-of-your-seat moments at the cabin, waiting for a would-be assassin, give you all the nerves not to mention the betrayal you feel when you find who set that devious set of events into motion. Oh, Farmer and Rachel, I will always love you too ☺
No Romantic Suspense list is complete without this one. In fact, I don’t know that there would be such a list if this movie hadn’t been made. Who can forget how their heart pounded as little Samuel slid across a dirty men’s room floor to hide from a murderer? Or forget the way they tingled during Book and Rachel’s romantic dance in that lantern-lit barn? Romantic Suspense at its best and core. But watch it at night because 430AM is for milking 😉
